Note: Doubling time is computed by dividing the growth rate into 70. Growth rate is birth rate (births per 1000 population) minus death rate (deaths per 1000) expressed in percentage. For instance, in Nicaragua the birth rate is 37 and the death rate is 6. The growth rate is thus 3.1 percent. This figure divided into 70 equals a doubling time of 23 years if present demographic conditions remain fairly constant.
If the fertility rate remains below 2.1 children per family for an extended time, the population will eventually decline. However, there are many countries in which the fertility rate is below 2.1 yet the population is still increasing. This is because there is a large percentage of the population in the reproductive age range from 15 - 45. The population doubling times of Denmark and Singapore are 990 and 64 years respectively. Yet, the fertility rate is the same at 1.7 children per family average. In Singapore there is a larger segment of the population in the fertility range. Denmark has had a low fertility rate for many more years, and the percentage of the population over 45 is twice as large as in Singapore.
